I'm totally loving Kim Kardashian's dress in this pic. It's by Ani Lee Dresses! Amazing. Her boobs are a little much for it but the dress is fabulous.

Healthy Subsitutes for Sugar, Butter, Eggs and Whipped Cream

Aug 11, 2010 Author: Katie Lara | Filed under: Food and Cocktails!, Health

Here are some awesome tips from FitSugar to lower your calories and fat:
  • Agave nectar for sugar: While it should still be used sparingly, agave nectar is sweeter than sugar, so you'll be using less, plus it won't cause a spike in blood sugar levels like sugar.
  • Avocado for butter: When baking, sub out half the butter with avocado for less calories, saturated fat, and cholesterol.
  • Ground flaxseeds for eggs: Who knew flaxseeds could replace eggs in your baking recipes? One teaspoon of ground flaxseeds and 1/4 cup of water replaces a single egg.
  • Parsnips for potatoesParsnips are just one kind out of many healthy veggies that can replace potatoes in a French fry recipe.
  • Greek yogurt for whipped cream: Mixing in Greek yogurt with your whipped cream (or replacing it all together), cuts out fat, giving you more calcium, protein, iron, and healthy bacteria in the process.
  • Turkey for beef: Try a healthy turkey burger instead of beef burger at your next BBQ.

Flex Mussels NYC Review Complete with Deep Fried Whoopie Pie

Aug 11, 2010 Author: Katie Lara | Filed under: Food and Cocktails!, Lifestyle, Love and Travel, Restaurant Review

After dinner tonight at Flex Mussels I nearly had to roll myself the 10 blocks home to my apartment after the massive amount of food we consumed. The space is deceptively small from the outside but when you get to the back room there are high ceilings and warm decor. In fact, the sign out front may confuse less seafood-conscious consumers to think that the restaurant is even a gym, well, for those who can't spell Muscles anyway. We waited at the crowded bar for a few minutes before our table was ready. When we reached the table we each ordered one of the many original bottled beers. I got one that had a touch of apple in it. Yum!

Since I was doing a restaurant review (not because I'm a pig) we decided to do lots of splitting with our friends (I will not tell you how many since then you won't realize how much we actually ate). We ordered a lobster roll to split as an appetizer, which came with fries too. Having been an avid fan of Mermaid Inn I was nervous to depart but I was happy I did. This lobster roll kicked MI's butt. Next we split 3 pots of mussels, the Thai (curry coconut broth, lemongrass, coriander, lime, garlic, ginger), Parma (parmigiano cream, meyer lemon, scallions, toasted garlic and shallots) and Fra Diavlo (San Marzano tomatoes, olive oil, garlic, fresh basil). Each pot was a delectable tureen of delicious morsels. But I gotta say the best part of the pot was the sauce. We soaked up piece after piece of bread in the savory broths. The Thai and the Parma were definitely the table faves. Yum, my mouth is watering just thinking of them.

You may worry that all this seafood could get nauseating in the massive quantity in which we consumed it but it wasn't. In fact, we were even ready to order 6 donuts and a Deep-fried Whoopie Pie. The donuts were a huge hit among everyone. They literally melt in your mouth and are each infused with something different (lemon, blueberry, chocolate, hazelnut, etc.) Oh and in case you aren't feeling fat enough there is a creamy dipping sauce that's to die for. The whoopie pie is filled with a cream cheese frosting and covered in some sort of crusty coating. The chocolate cake was pure decadence. Apparently the pastry chef is going to be on the next season of Top Chef, Desserts Only. Our waitress told us he's a very entertaining little Diva so remember to watch out for him.

This is an amazing restaurant that people are flocking to try. If you like seafood I strongly recommend. Yum! Oh, did I mention we saw (well, BF's cousin pointed out) Gabourey Sidibe! She was so adorable, or shall I say precious (ba-dum-pshhh). I couldn't stop staring.

Awesome Eyeshadow Givenchy Le Prisme Eyeshadow Quartet: Pastel Model Super Summery

Aug 11, 2010 Author: Katie Lara | Filed under: Beauty

I am going to quote my good friend, we'll call her D and say that typically, I feel like I'm my little pony when I wear pastel shadows but these happen to be amazing for the summer. The swatches picture did not do them justice but I'm all about this awesome quad. It's so great for the summer. Especially summer nights when you're wearing white. I mix them all together or sometimes I just do the green and grey. I love the texture of Givenchy products, they're extremely soft and have great adherance unlike cheap drugstore brands that you keep rubbing all over and end up mostly under your little peepers.

Tanda Acne Light Therapy Review-Clear Skin Is No Longer Light Years Away

Aug 11, 2010 Author: Katie Lara | Filed under: Beauty

The Tanda Clear Acne Light Therapy device boasts to help you achieve healthy, acne-free skin in only minutes a day in the comfort of your home. It claims to be scientifically proven to kill the propionibacterium acne bacteria that causes mild to moderate acne by accelerating the skin's natural healing process. I have only used the product two times so far but I will keep you posted on my results. Although I don't have severe acne (thank the lord, I mean I am almost 30!) but I definitely have small breakouts pretty regularly still (will they ever stop!??!) So stay posted while I run you through our review of our use with the product. After one evening and morning use I don't see a diff yet but you're not supposed to. I can tell you that I'm very anxious because I've heard great things and it'd be wonderful to get rid of some blemishes. My one critique so far is that while each treatment only takes 3 minutes you have to do about 6-8, which clearly runs you longer than the 3 minute claim. Nothing wrong with that, just sayin'

Stay tuned to watch my acne dissolve…

Shocker of the Year: Vitamin Water Isn’t Good for You

Aug 10, 2010 Author: Katie Lara | Filed under: Food and Cocktails!, Health

Coca-Cola is being sued by a non-profit company for false claims that Vitamin water is actually healthy. Coke's defense? No reasonable consumer could possibly believe that it's healthy. Brilliant. Read the Huffington Post article about Vitamin Water here. Granted the second 50-cent signed on to their campaign I quit drinking the Kool-aid, err Vitamin water

Drink water, people! Or fresh juice! So much better for you! Better yet, chew the whole fruit and get the added benefits of fiber!
