Before I go on vacation if I'm going to a particularly wonderful place I love to read a book or watch a movie that will get me in the mood before I go. A little cultural insight doesn't hurt either. During my honeymoon planning I came across this awesome list put together by Lonely Planet to help you figure out what to read or watch ahead of your trip! I thought it was really interesting and helpful!

I'm finally planning my honeymoon y'all! We're going to Southeast Asia! I cannot wait!!! Do you know how many shots you need to get to go over there? It's crazy! You know what else is crazy? I think I'm in the wrong business, Fortune 500 said that the pharmaceutical industry topped the list of the most profitable recently. The high cost of prescription drugs in the US is a major issue in the health care reform debate. And shouldn't it be!?

A recent study indicated that research on new drugs to for AIDS, heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer's, and arthritis will save more than $750 billion in treatment costs over the next 25 years. If you are buying expensive drugs in the US you are helping the pharmaceutical industry fund their research and development.



Many  Americans are looking for alternatives to purchasing their prescriptions here in the US. But let's be honest you don't want to buy it at some shady market! But you can save money on drugs purchased from other countries. For example, a Canadian pharmacy , carries the same prescriptions available in the US for much cheaper. The reason for this is because drugs in Canada are under government price controls. Canada also carries a wider selection of generic drugs than the US.

Bonjour mes amis!!! And for those of you dolls who aren’t fluent in Francais that means hello friends! This past weekend I had the pleasure of visiting Montréal. Somehow I had never been to this fabulous city despite it only being a mere 6 hour drive away. We were thrilled when one of our favorite couples asked us to go away Labor Day weekend with them for a little sightseeing and A LOT of eating! We quickly decided to stay at the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth, as in my opinion the Fairmont is an extremely reliable hotel chain and I didn’t feel like doing research. Plus, you can always bet that the Fairmont will be right in the heart of the action. The Fairmont Queen Elizabeth was no different, it was located right in the vivacious heart of Montréal.

Upon check-in I was pleased (yet not surprised) that the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth was so centrally located and within a short walking distance of (what soon became) many of our favorite parts of town. It was also a very short walk to many of the cultural and sports attraction. I was also interested to learn that the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth is located right above the train station (so convenient for tourists). The hotel is also connected to an intricate underground world with thousands of boutiques, restaurants and cafés. Montréal (so I’m told) gets pretty cold in the winter so this seems so ingenious! I wish NYC would build something similar so I could still shop in sub-zero temperatures!

I was psyched to learn that besides myself, the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth has housed quite a dignified clientele including Prince Charles, General Charles de Gaulle, Nelson Mandela, and even the Dalai Lama. Equally as exciting was the hotel’s historical celeb clientele, which boasts classic movers and shakers like John Travolta and John Lennon. In fact, John Lennon held his famous ‘bed-in’ in 1969 in Suite 1742, where the song “Give Peace a Chance” was written and recorded! Being such a crazy Beatles fan, this really did it for me! If a hotel is good enough for John Lennon, it’s good enough for me!

The hotel itself is ginormicous (translation=hugungous). There are 1,037 rooms and if they were anything like my junior suite they were extremely luxurious. The charm of this hotel in my opinion is that the rooms really reflected the city’s distinct elegance and style.

Each room and suites at Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth offer the following amenities:

• Air-conditioning with individual climate control
• Alarm clock-radio
• Cable television with in-room pay per view movies, Play Station® and video check-out
• Coffee/tea maker with complimentary coffee/tea
• Hairdryer
• Iron and ironing board
• Mini-bar
• Two telephones with voice-mail (messages are accessible from outside the hotel)

The beds were super comfortable and I loved the turn-down service each evening. I especially appreciated the two bottles of water they left for these two kiddos who definitely needed to rehydrate when they got back. The room was quiet as could be, I didn’t hear a thing and slept comfortably through each night.

I must tell you that there are a few parts of the hotel that felt a little dated. The technology is a little behind us in the USA. The TVs are not flatscreens, which many of you have probably come to expect in luxury hotels. This isn’t something I minded at all given that I spent very little time in the room other than for sleeping. In fact the only time I even turned on the TV was when our friends ditched us go get engaged! (Wahoo!!) I chose to watch Legally Blonde in French and brush up on my language skills! Other than the televisions everything in the hotel was extremely high-quality. Especially the bathrooms—both of them! Probably my favorite part about our Junior Suite was having two bathrooms. What a luxury for a couple from NYC whose bathroom is the size of a shoebox. The bathrooms were marble and the amenities as always were impressive. I particularly enjoy how the Fairmont hotels give you Scope mouthwash, cotton swabs, cotton balls, a nail file and a shower cap. It’s the little things at this property that make you realize you’re at a truly fine hotel.

Word to my fellow internet-nerds, if you’re planning on wanting to surf the net during down time be sure to join the President’s club as it entitles you to free internet access, which is about $16/day otherwise!

The only other thing I have to say about the hotel that isn’t a glowing recommendation is that the hotel has a heavy business clientele feeling. For me I happen to associate this with quality but there is a large conference attendee population at the hotel that you may wish to be aware of.

The hotel is also home to three restaurants (I didn’t have the chance to try them unfortunately as our friends had us scheduled pretty tight) Les Voyageurs Bar, Le Montréalais Bistrot-Bar and the award-winning Beaver Club, which are all recognized among Canada’s best restaurants.

Our friend, let's call her Baguette for the sake of her anonymity, made the best itinerary for our trip, filled with delicious French restaurants, cafes and bars. Here are the must see places in my opinion. For dinner our first night we went to a restaurant called Lemeac. They have a fantastic late night menu after 10PM. You get an appetizer and an entree like Steak Frites or Short Rib or Duck for $25! And this is no cheap restaurant so this is a bargain! For brunch the next day we went to a restaurant called Le Cartet, which served the most gorgeous brunch specialties in a casual cafe setting. We each ordered the same thing, the Super Salmon Breakfast it came with a salmon/sweet potato cake, salmon scrambled eggs and a half of a smoked salmon bagel for all this, coffee and a mimosa it was only $20! Not bad, right? Delish!

Here are some pictures of us out and about before I give you more food suggestions.

This was at our favorite bar, Barmacie. Instead of having to return time and time again for your cocktails they give you a bottle with mixers for a reasonable price and let you mix them yourself. Such a treat! Then there are ledges around the bar where you can rest your tray and become your own bartender!

Perhaps my favorite French cafe was Cafe Figaro. The interior was just gorgeous and the croissants were out of this world! Tres bonne!!!!!! Very low key and authentic. Love, love, loved this place! Probably one of my favorite destinations we visited.

4 of us were supposed to split a chocolate croissant but I got my greasy little paws on it and it didn't stand a chance. We had to order this rum and chocolate croissant and it did not disappoint! Running, oozing rum & chocolate sauce in a croissant? Who knew such a thing existed! Pas moi!

Just a random patisserie I thought was beautiful.

For the big celebratory engagement dinner, (Wooo!) we went to a restaurant called L'originale. 

The food here was outstanding. The true standouts were the tuna tartare, truffle salad (unlike anything you've ever tasted. I think they put crack in it!) and the scallops. Truly some of the best food I've ever had. Now, if you want a great and truly Montreal-ish (is that a word?) beverage you have to try a Bloody Ceasar!

It typically contains vodka, Clamato (a blend of tomato juice and clam broth), hot sauce and Worcestershire sauce, and is served with ice in a large, celery salt-rimmed glass, typically garnished with a stalk of celery and wedge of lime. And if you're luck you can get it with some fresh seafood!

We also ate at an adorable cafe called Au Festin de Babette. It offers gourmet delicacies, imported goods, decadent chocolates and a tea salon in which to unwind and savor them.   It had fantastic crepes and such an adorable ambiance. It's definitely a must see when you're shopping to fuel up.

For breakfast we went to a restaurant called Grande Mere Poule. It was incredible! The brunch was honestly the best I ever had. The eggs Benedicts were especially amazing. The waffles weren't the best. That's my only comment that isn't positive! The bacon, baguettes, banana bread and potatoes were all great!

Congrats to our friends, Baguette and Pamplemousse!! We had the best vacation ever. I would highly highly recommend the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth and a visit to Montréal in general!

The Fairmont Copley Plaza has a sister hotel in Boston's waterfront! Fairmont Battery Wharf! This is the Fairmont's answer to modern luxury. The property is breathtaking and has gorgeous views of the wharf.

Aragosta's real draw I would imagine is the outdoor seating with such a beautiful view! Such a romantic spot if you're visiting Boston with your loved one–or your parents and your loved one if you're like me! I'm not sure if it was just the night we were there dining but it waso the perfect amount of breeze and an absolutely breathtaking sunset!

Aragosta is just a short distance from the hustle and bustle of Hanover Street and on historic Battery Wharf. It's also withing walking distance from downtown so although it's quieter it's still accessible to downtown. Overall it's a nice change from the busy North End if you're looking for some great contemporary Italian cuisine.

The decor was modern with a few nautical touches. The staff was friendly and really knew the menu. He even told us exactly the right amount to order, which was a couple apps, a pasta in between and then main courses. Ross and I love sharing apps so it was perfect!

The drinks were imaginative and original while remaining light. I particularly recommend the Cilantro Sting, which contains cilantro, Patron Silver, vodka, lime, and sirrano chillies.  The essence of this drink is of course crushed cilantro. It’s the perfect amount of flavor to stand out and be noticeable without being the only flavor. Ross also got a drink with limoncello and yellow pepper! It so delightful!

For appetizers we sampled the Lobster croquettes with white beans. There was such a hefty portion of lobster and the toasted bread beneath was perfectly done.

The figs wrapped in prosciutto atop gorgonzola were perfectly done as well.

My Dad had the veal meatballs and said he would have been happy just eating that for dinner!

My Cilantro Sting! Yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!

The short ribs were incredible. They come atop a bed of beans and corn. The short ribs fall apart as soon as they touch your fork.

The tuna had a great flavor but was a bit well done for my liking.

My father had the lamb and it was so beautiful. It comes with ricotta gnocchi and a cucumber and mint salad to compliment. The lamb was cooked perfectly and I was told it was very tender.

For dessert, the must have on the menu was definitely the chocolate bread pudding!

The indoor seating was beautiful as well. Although I highly recommend an outdoor table.

Too many establishments serve steaks, the Oak Room worships them!

Upon making my reservations at the Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel I was invited by the Public Relations department to review their famous steak restaurant, the Oak Room. Well, you can imagine my excitement! Although I'm mostly vegan these days, that does not apply to birthday celebrations or filet mignon! I don't eat much meat as you know but I do make an exception about once a year for the perfect steak with bernaise sauce. I have been to about every steakhouse in NYC and have to tell you that not many have impressed me as much as the Oak Room! It was absolutely incredible. It was one of those meals that I'll never forget. (Not to get too emotional about a restaurant!)

The evening began with cocktails in the Oak Bar, which is breathtaking. They also have live music, which was fabulous. The atmosphere is lavish and reminiscent of a luxurious hunting lodge (complete with deer heads on the walls, only thing I could have done without–but again that's my vegetarian side rearing its ugly head).

The restaurant blends the perfect balance of ostentation and comfort. It feels like you are a special guest welcomed into a intimate, early 20th Century dining room. The ceilings were carved hardwood and the window treatments were decorated with stately draping.

Back to one of my favorite parts of the experience–the cocktails, The cocktails are a bit pricey but you truly are getting something unusual (they range from $15-$20). Even the presentation of the martinis are creative (and functional). They serve a cute mini-carafe of your beverage inside a pitcher of ice versus bringing a metal shaker for self-refills. As you know, I don't have a problem with a hefty price-tag as long as I feel like I'm getting something special–and I did!

I ordered a drink that came with bourbon and blueberries garnished with bleu cheese stuffed olives. I didn't know I was such a bourbon fan until I had this drink!  It was the perfect combination of salty and sweet. The blueberries also masked the bourbon enough that it was easy to drink! Ross got a pomegranate and cucumber cocktail that was truly the best of its kind I've ever had. You could actually taste the fresh cucumber! And these fellas were stiff! But in a good way!

The bread was scrumptious! Comes with hummus, butter and tapende! Yum!!!!!!!!!

For appetizers we sampled the tuna tartare, clam chowder and crabcake (below). After being told by our waiter that the crabcake was the best he had ever tasted, how could I not try one. And he was right! They were moist and cooked to perfection!  The tuna could not have been fresher if I had just caught it myself! And Ross loved the clam chowder!

For our entrees we ordered chateaubriand to share! Not a common dish these days so when I see it I know I'm at a fancy restaurant. It's the most tender cut of beef and it did not disappoint! It was done to perfection and cut right at the table by the world's best waiter (Frank Brown–ask for him! We loved him!)!

Each steak was served with a roasted clove of garlic! The perfect compliment to every steak! And of course the bernaise sauce came on side! Yum! What does every steak need if not butter sauce!?!  The chateaubriand came with a potato as well as asparagus (which we subbed for spinach). The sauteed spinach was delicious and the parmesean fries were fantastic. The sides were also large enough for an entire table to share. Extremely generous portions!

After dinner is complete the Oak Room brings out a giant serving of cotton candy! Yum!!! And such a fun and cute touch!

For dessert we each sampled a different dish and passed them around and shared. Our favorite was the cheesecake, which came with rhubarb on top! Amazing! So creamy and delicious too. Next we liked the Boston Cream Pie. It was a different twist on your usual idea of a traditional BCP. Definitely worth trying! The chocolate sauce on top was definitely real chocolate. You can tell the moment it hits your lips! My fam loved the strawberry soup but of course, I am partial to chocolate and cheesecake though the fruit didn't stand a chance!

I think that the Oak Room is a classic staple of Boston as is Copley Plaza! I would say that this restaurant is definitely a must-see on your venture to Boston and well worth its higher price-tag. If you can't stop in for dinner I absolutely insist that you have a cocktail in the Oak Bar! Best cocktail menu ever, the drinks were divine and you just must see the exquisite architecture. !

I just returned from a fabulous weekend getaway from NYC to Boston! I've been on a mission to come up with fun weekend getaways that you can do somewhat on a budget. Boston seemed the perfect destination because you can take the train or even drive! In a mere 4 hours (even less without traffic possibly) you're in an entirely different city. With my 30th birthday looming, Ross and I decided it was the perfect opportunity for a getaway! We were off to meet my parents for the weekend to celebrate! I had heard great things about the Fairmont Copley Plaza and it did not disappoint!

For those of you who are just stumbling onto this blog, a word about my hotel taste. After staying at my first Four Seasons hotel, I just simply could not go back. It was the downfall of my bank account. Since then I've been spoiled by some of the best hotels, including the Fairmont in Maui and now the Fairmont Copley Plaza. I am also a total germaphobe, one tiny mistake by the hotel and I'm skeeved out. So you can trust that when I say something is clean, it is!  I am not easily impressed so when I say I like a hotel, it means something. So, ever onward with this post…

The Fairmont Copley Plaza, Boston is actually a landmark in Boston's historic Back Bay. The hotel was built on the original site of Boston's Museum of Fine Arts. The hotel's architect, Henry Janeway Hardenbergh, also designed The Plaza Hotel in New York, he included a double "P" monogram along the building's exterior, in the ballroom and on doorknobs throughout the hotel. A touch of NYC? We instantly felt right at home! It didn't hurt that we were greeted by Catie Copley, the Fairmont's signature Labrador who greets guests in the lobby. Just the sweetest pup you've ever met! She even has her own children's storybook and will sign paw your copy to prove that you met her!

A recent $34 million renovation and restoration project updated each guest room with modern amenities and gorgeous artwork to give each suite an authentic Bean Town feeling. The architecture of the hotel is absolutely gorgeous and ornate. Of course, remember, I am more of classic hotel kind of girl than modern so this place was exactly what I was hoping for. If you remember I was NOT the biggest fan of the W Hotel in Miami. The Fairmont Copley's luxurious and elegant decor definitely impressed. The floors were marble-icious, glittering chandeliers filled the hallways and ballrooms. I felt like the old-time elegance really took me back in time to the good old days of real charm!

The hotel is in the best location, you're a short walk to the Boston Commons, first class shopping on Newbury street, steps away from the freedom trail tours where you can learn about all of the wonderful historical events that took place in Boston during our country's early years. Back Bay Train station is only one block away and there is also a T stop about 1 block as well!

But back to the hotel… through my wonderful blog we were kindly upgraded to the Gold Floor. The Copley Plaza's Fairmont Gold is a luxurious and exclusive hotel within the hotel located on the entire fourth floor of the building. Even the most discerning of travelers will find this a treat! You know I'm all about full-disclosure over here so while I did not pay for the upgrade, I will tell you that if when I return I would 1000% recommend you making the upgrade. I have never been so impressed with a hotel's upgraded level. You have your own separate check-in desk that really takes care of anything you need in an instant and that's all fine and good, but the best part was that the Fairmont Gold has its own separate lounge for its guests (complete with wi-fi). And while the relaxing library is a great place to kick back when you're not sightseeing, the real draw for me was the food! They serve a nearly full breakfast in the morning, complete with bagels, eggs, Boston baked beans, lox, coffee, espresso and more. And this is all complimentary! Later in the day they serve cookies (which are divine) and in the evening they serve light appetizers you can grab before dinner. Truth be told, you could probably eat these goodies for a meal and be completely satisfied.

Here was the special blend of berry tea (only available at Fairmont). It was the perfect, refreshing bev to drink when we got back from our walking tours everyday!

Just another one of the ornate chandeliers! I tried to capture it with my point-and-shoot camera but it truly doesn't do it justice!

Me again with the other Catie! She is great if you have kids! They absolutely loved her (although really weren't too many kids at the hotel). Also, do you see how lavish these rugs are? They were absolutely massive!! Must seriously take years to make just one of them! And you have to believe me at how fresh everything looked. Sometimes hotels with this decor start to look run down but nothing here was the slightest!

Loved the ceilings! So gorgeous everywhere you looked!

Fairmont Gold room. The rooms were immaculate and truly felt like a home away from home. The beds were spectacular (and this is coming from someone with a history of back problems!) The bathrooms were marble and equipped with double sinks! My pictures of the bathroom seem to be lost, I was sharing cameras with my parents and unfortunately I must have somehow left those photos on theirs. As to be expected from a Fairmont property, they too were immaculate. For those of you Manhattan married couples, you know what a true vacation that is!

This is Regina Pizzeria in the North End! You may have to wait a few minutes to eat at this dive but it'll be worth it! Super cheap too! If you don't want to wait you can also carry out and sit on a nearby bench! Take advantage of the concierge at the hotels, they really (and quite unusually in my experience) knew the hot spots that were worth seeing! They told us about the Liberty Hotel (although friends had as well, it gave me confidence that they knew what they were talking about. Liberty hotel is an old jailhouse turned into a hotel. Absolutely a remarkable sight! Not my choice to stay but you must check out Alibi bar.) The concierge also recommended my new favorite restaurant, Trattoria Il Panino. A great Italian place in the North End. Amazing al fresco seating and it's right near where they filmed "The Town" with Ben Affleck so you can check out the real movie location! The restaurant's walls are covered with celebs who have visited the restaurant too!

Just a sampling of the breakfast buffet, which is complimentary to the Gold guests! Sidenote, best lox and bagels ever! And I'm from New York!

In the evening you could make yourself a cocktail (these were not complimentary) but it's pretty nice to make yourself a drink and not have to tap into the mini-bar!

Everything about this hotel was 5-star (even their 4 diamond AAA rating–not easy to come by these days!). Every member of their staff was accommodating, polite and extremely knowledgeable!

Overall, I think this is a fabulous weekend getaway destination. Your money will be well spent at this luxurious hotel. After spending a fortune at the W Hotel in Miami I was a little frustrated, I didn't feel like I had spent my money well or been pampered. Here, I felt the extra money for such a luxurious hotel was well worth it. I will absolutely return to the Fairmont Copley Plaza, in fact I can't imagine going anywhere else!

Namaste, ladies! I just got back from my trip to Miami for my post-wedding getaway/Smartypanties review-trip (real honeymoon is scheduled for January next year in case you were wondering!). It was definitely a week of excess eating, drinking and sun. So necessary after all the wedding planning! I’ll start with my favorite hotel we stayed at, the Canyon Ranch. From the moment you walk in you instantly become relaxed. This is Miami’s off-season so the property was definitely less busy than say during spring break but this made it the most perfect time to go in my opinion. If you’re looking to unwind, this is the time! The check-in process was a dream. Our room wasn’t ready yet so the receptionist took our number to call us as soon as it would be. They took our bags and we were off to explore!

Our beautiful little kitchen! They give you a lovely tea set to use. I made us a pot of soothing chamomile before we showered one day. It was heavenly.

The Rooms

Our suite was equipped with a beautiful kitchen and living room. Everything was absolutely immaculate. We had two balconies overlooking the beautiful ocean and pool. They give you luxurious robes to put on after a great shower or a soak in your enormous bathtub. They have maid service twice a day and super technologically advanced buttons you can press if you want privacy or to have the room made up. Each night we came back to a turned down bed and soft rock music. This was one of our favorite parts of the trip! The bed was so comfortable as you would imagine.There were also two enormous flatscreen TVs in our room, so the technology was way up to par!

The Activities

They have something everyone would want. Yoga, Gyrokinesis, Meditation, Group Walks, Spinning, Abs, Legs and Kickboxing. Oh and did I mention the 2 story rock-climbing wall? The Huzz and I even made it all the way to the top! It’s harder than it looks! The instructors are fabulous. We spoke with our rock-climbing guide and he told us that Canyon Ranch interviewed over 1000 applicants before they hired their staff. Each instructor is truly an expert in his or her field and it makes the experience so fabulous. If you’re not a class person, there is also a state-of-the-art gym, complete with touch-screen TVs on each machine to watch your favorite shows, that is if you get tired of the ridiculous view of the ocean. You’d be surprised how much quicker your run goes when that’s what you have to look out at. Or if you want to run outside there is a fabulous path just along the water. The rest of the gym is gorgeous and super-clean as well.

The Grounds

The grounds are beautiful. Everything about this place screams whispers, “Zen!” There are 4 pools, one being adults-only, which is nice if you just don’t feel like getting splashed. Although, I have to say the children that were around were completely innocuous, when it comes to annoying children it’s always nice to have a safe escape. I had read some reviews on Trip Advisor complaining about children but I think the resort does a nice job of giving adults their space as well as fun activities for the kiddies and families to do together. At the main pool you can order food. You can also do this on the beach. The property is beach-front and they have attendants down waiting to set up chairs for you. It’s the perfect place to put your feet up and chill out. You can also order food by just raising your flag and having them bring it right down to you! The property is spattered with water fountains and gardens to sit and chill out or read a book. There is also a lovely library and lobby where you can rest, put your feet up and take it easy. We even loved perusing the store, filled with workout gear, yoga goodies and inspirational books and CDs. Yep, we drank the Kool-aid!

The Spa/Aquavana

The spa is truly the most unique I’ve ever been to. First of all, let me start by saying I am a total germ-a-phobe, for those of you who don’t know me. I have insanely high standards after visiting some of the best spas in NYC (and unfortunately also some of the worst—enter, Spa Castle). But I had never seen anything as fabulous as the Aquavana at Canyon Ranch. It’s a mixture of heaven and water! It’s a haven between the locker room and the spa that’s filled with wet saunas, dry saunas, foot tubs, cool showers, Jacuzzis and an igloo! Yes, I said it, an igloo! The idea is to go from hot to cold. It’s supposed to help rid your body of toxins. It’s a European-inspired aquathermal oasis offering intriguing treatment suites designed to relax your muscles and enrich your blood with oxygen. It’s truly an invigorating experience and even if you don’t book a spa treatment (which I think you should) you have unlimited access here if you’re a guest of the hotel. Once you’ve indulged in the Aquavana to your heart’s content you should try out the spa. I personally am old-fashioned so I stuck with a facial and a Deep-Tissue massage, which were soothing as can be, but the spa offers standout unique treatments like body wraps and traditional detox rituals. They also employ two healers who can offer Reiki treatments, healing energy or acupuncture, if that’s your thang. There are also medical consultants and nutritionists if you need to detox your diet or learn about building better health habits. The spa isn’t exorbitant but it ain’t cheap either. It’s pretty much what you would expect, somewhere around average for such a luxurious spa, which offers use of its aquavana as well. So in my opinion definitely a place worth the splurge. You could come here with a girlfriend and relax in the aquavana all day long. Massages begin at $140 for 50 minutes. Facials start at $150 as well for a deep cleansing facial. Body wraps also start in the same area at $165 for a 50 minute treatment session.

The Restaurant

The restaurant is gorgeous inside but has fabulous outdoor seating that’s in the shade and oh-so relaxing. I know you may be nervous that at a facility like Canyon Ranch, where they emphasize healthy eating and exercise, that you may not be able to indulge at the restaurant, I mean it is a vacation afterall, right? Well have no fear, I bear good news. The portions were not unreasonably tiny and the prices weren’t unreasonably exorbitant. Plus, many things are even organic (or at least partially so). Egg dishes ran about $11-12 and many came with potatoes, toast, or fruit. Nothing skimpy about that! Also you can easily supplement a side of turkey or veal bacon or other side-dish for only $4. Personally I loved the fresh-squeezed juices. My favorite was the watermelon! It’s so sweet and refreshing you’ll find yourself ordering a second. Also, good to know, the hotel serves complimentary coffee and tea until about 9:30 in the library, which is divine and also will save you a few bucks at breakfast!

The service in the restaurant is fabulous. Each staff member is friendly but not over-intrusive. My other morning favorites included “The New Yorker,” which is half a hemp-seed bagel with lox, tomato, cream cheese and onions, omelets, filled with anything your heart can desire, and the Sweet potato pancakes. Those were my absolute favorite! Definitely not to be missed! So unique and light but so filling at the same time.

It’s such a pleasure eating at Canyon Ranch because although the food is delectable you know you can’t get into too much trouble. Plus, they list calorie counts for everything so you at least know what you're getting into! Lunch Favorites? The artichoke fries were ridiculous. Such a satisfying, salty snack and yet totally on your diet because they’re baked! The fish tacos and grass-fed beef tacos down by the pool were also to die for! The portions were also pretty hearty if you’re hungry. The only thing I ate that I didn’t love was the chocolate zucchini cake and chocolate chip cookies. Not bad, just wouldn’t say they were my favorite. The other desserts were much better, especially the cheesecake lollipops. A must-try! My favorite part about the restaurant is that during the day it is an extremely laid-back environment but at night it transforms into a chic, trendy restaurant.

The Bar

I had one of my favorite drinks that I’ve ever tasted here. It’s called a “Purple Pillow” and it consists of house-made lavender infused vodka and muddled blueberries. Other cocktails were fabulous too like the Lychee martini, which uses house-made vanilla infused vodka. She even showed me how to make the infused vodka. You just soak overnight whatever you want it to be infused with! Okay so maybe I could have inferred that, but point is, the bartender was a sweetheart and her drinks were to die for! And they were strong as heck! Just don’t have too many of them the night before your 7am beach walk!

Things to Know Before You Go

Bring lots of workout clothes you’re going to want to do a million classes. You may want to spa or swim in between though so make sure you bring lots of changes for throughout the day. No one wants to put back on sweaty gym clothes! Gross!! My only complaint (literally!) was that the bath products were not my favorite so if you’re picky you may want to bring your own. Finally, it gets pretty windy down by the water so you may want to bring a light sweater.

I can't tell you enough how much we enjoyed our stay. It was everything you would come to expect from the rumors about how fabulous Canyon Ranch hotels are!

One of my most favorite benefits of being a freelance writer, often writing about travel is that I get to do just that, travel. As most of you know, in just a few weeks I will be getting married. We aren't going on our honeymoon until next winter but we definitely wanted to do a little getaway in the meantime to relax and enjoy each other after the nuptials. Where better to go than Florida? If you can time things right you can get great deals at your favorite five-star hotels by not going during their busiest season. Who wants all the crowds anyway? I want to relax!

So here is what I have to look forward to, and what you'll get to hear about in just a little less than a month!

As you probably know, unless you live under a rock, Canyon Ranch is recognized throughout the world for their divine spa treatments and their fabulous approach to integrating healthy nutrition, fitness, lifestyle as well as spiritual growth. I can't wait to go and start my post-bridezilla, zen-like life!

Included with your stay are dozens of complimentary daily group fitness classes and walks, which are led by experienced, enthusiastic instructors. Classes range from yoga to vigorous cardio workouts! Classes change each week! 

After I work my butt off I plan to eat some delicious and healthy food (at least until I get dinner at Barton G and eat my face off!). Canyon Ranch Hotel and Spa in Miami Beach offers award-winning cuisine featuring the cleanest, freshest and most wholesome foods, emphasizing organic, local and sustainable. In addition to eating, you also learn about nutritious dining during your stay and can even sit down with a nutrition expert and learn how to eat better for your own personal goals. 

I'm most excited to check out the spa that Canyon Ranch is so famous for! Included with your stay is access to Aquavana, the most luxurious collection of European-style aquatic environments. I also plan to report back about a facial or massage (or two!).

Let me start this review of the Tabacon off by explaining what kind of traveler I am so you know how I compare to your own standards. I am a crazy germaphobe who gets skeeved out at the tiniest bug or speck of dirt. After staying at the Fairmont and the Four Seasons in Hawaii I can only accept the best.

I would give the Tabacon a 4 star rating. The service was great and the rooms were clean and had a rustic luxury about them. However, I would not say that this hotel is a five star resort. That said, it was beautiful and I don’t think that you’re going to find a nicer resort in the area, at least from what we saw. Arenal is not a very advanced city. The beauty of it is its rustic charm. The service though at the hotel was fabulous. All of the staff was extremely friendly. They also do lots of little touches to make your stay feel special. The night that you arrive they put fresh tropical fruit in your room and the night that you leave they leave you small homemade chocolate treats.

Rooms: We stayed in a superior room. It was between the main building and the a la carte restaurant, which we found to be a great location. It was quiet and not a far walk from either building. The beds had white linens and were very clean. Trust me I do a thorough inspection coming from NYC where bedbugs are a huge problem right now. There were a few small bugs that we had in our room but you are in a rainforest, and even me, a total crazy person, expected that. The rooms had umbrellas and nice bathrobes for guests to use. The bathroom products were Molton Brown, which I always appreciate. I actually somewhat judge a hotel based on its bath products so this was a plus. They also have a hairdryer in the room, which is nice for us women.

Fruit from the first night

Hot Springs: The hot springs are the highlight of this hotel. They are breathtaking and such a relaxing way to end your day after you have been travelling or rappelling down the side of a mountain. There is even a bar in the main pool to help you get even more relaxed. There are tons of different tubs for you to try. They are so much fun. However, I would say that you don’t need a full day to do these. We enjoyed using them each night after we returned from our grueling activities. Plus, if you’re a guest at the hotel you get exclusive access to them at night so they’re much less crowded because during the day they’re open to the public.

Activities: We booked all of our activities through the hotel and while you may pay a small premium to do so, it is totally worth it. They seemed to have chosen all the best companies and they arrange your pickup, etc. When we told our guides who we were doing the next activity with they were always like “oh, they’re the best!” Each of our guides spoke fantastic English and were extremely knowledgeable about the rainforest and the area. We did the full day hiking combo tour, which included a hike around the rainforest, a hike down to a waterfall and a hanging bridges tour. We really enjoyed this day, despite the fact that it was pouring. *Definitely bring your own poncho, they supply them but they don’t smell fresh, that’s for sure. We also did waterfall rappelling and ziplining. These were both fantastic. If you had to pick one activity we’d all recommend the waterfall rappelling, it was so unique. Just prepared to be soaked. You literally go underneath waterfalls. They provide jackets but make sure you have shoes you don’t mind getting completely submerged in water. Also make sure you bring a change of clothes with you, you can leave these on a dry truck. Then they take you for lunch after you do NOT want to be sitting in your wet clothes. Trust me. Also, you should know there is quite a hike at the end of the rappelling uphill. It’s not too long but if you have a hard time doing that you should be aware.

Dining: Let me preface this section by telling you that we are from NYC and are spoiled with the best restaurants the world has to offer so we are not easy critics. We ate breakfast every morning in the hotel and it was fabulous. It was definitely worth the higher price tag for the convenience of not having to go into town. They had an omelet bar, someone making pancakes and waffles, all the fresh tropical fruit you could ever want (mangos, papaya, passion fruit, pineapple, etc.) We ate dinner at the hotel in the a la carte restaurant as well and while it was good we weren’t blown away. However, the ambiance is absolutely beautiful. It is pricy though, about the cost of a really good restaurant in NYC. The food was good, not amazing. We were slightly bothered by the fact that they used imported US beef. Don’t even get me started on the problems with US beef. I won’t even eat it in the states. Plus, the cattle in Costa Rica is raised the way it should be, grazing free in the countryside. I don’t see why a hotel priding itself on being “green” would ship beef in from the US.

Dinner at Don Rufinos: We took a cab into La Fortuna the other nights we were staying at the Tabacon. It costs only $20 round trip and then we got to get a real taste of the local culture. The front desk arranged this for us. Don Rufinos is a steak restaurant and was great. We each got filet mignon, which was delicious. They also have small plates at the bar that are wonderful, in my opinion those may have even been the best. Don’t bother with the dessert here though it was frozen and mediocre at best. Try Guaro, or as the natives call it, Quatro Plumas (Four Feathers). It’s a very popular type of alcohol.

Dinner at La Chosa: We got typical Costa Rican plates here. The ambiance here was casual and fun but the food was just okay. You should try Guanabana juice though blended with milk. It was delicious and it’s a native fruit you can’t get many other places.

Lunch at Benedictu’s: During the combination tour activity, they include lunch and take you to Benedictu’s. The ambiance is nothing, it resembles a hotel lobby with no frills but the food served was typical Costa Rican plates and they were fantastic. The homemade hot sauce in particular. Just wonderful. Rice and beans, chicken, fish or steak, a sunny side up egg, grilled plaintain, salad and probably even more. This meal was delicious. Probably one of our favorites.

Spa: The spa was amazing. Definitely a must if you come here. It was extremely elegant and clean. You can even do couples activities together. There is a list at the hotel of specials, which were not on the website that are a great deal. For $150 you get a 30 minute massage, a 30 minute mud facial and a 30 minute volcano wrap. This all happens in a beautiful cabana outside with your sweetie. After the treatments you rinse off in a beautiful outdoor shower and are served delicious smoothies, my friend got Strawberry Tomato, how original?!? She said it was fantastic.

I would definitely recommend this hotel. I just think that you should know that it is not quite like the Four Seasons. That being said it is beautiful and the hot springs are fantastic. I think it would be a real mistake to come all the way to Costa Rica and not experience the hot springs and the volcano.

During our stay at Four Seasons Lodge at Koele we booked an excursion to do the Clay Shooting at Lana'i Pines and we were not disappointed.  They pick you up from the hotel and drive you a quick, maybe 5 minute ride out to the course, which is picturesque.  It's such a fun early morning activity to get you off your butts from just sitting at the pool sipping mai-tais.  For those of you who don't know exactly what clay shooting is (like moi), it's when you shoot at different clay targets that simulate different flight patterns of the different birds or animals.

I learned that it's one of the most challenging sporting clay sites in the world, the course features a dramatic landscape of deep gulches and ravines, vast expanses of pampas grass and groves of Australian pine and lantana brush. Beginners are introduced to the sport with a 45-minute lesson by a certified instructor, emphasising the essence of the sport and gun safety.

Safety is a top priority here, which of course the girl in me really appreciated.  The staff makes you go through every proper precaution before you begin.  The instructor we had was absolutely amazing. He really knew how to teach you to hit the targets. Even me, the most inexperienced sharp shooter was able to hit many of the targets.  You'll have a fun time and a unique experience to share with your friends.  Plus, you get a cerficate and a pin for free.
