Prices will be increasing as much as 10-20% depending on collections though we suspect it will be their classic collections that take the hit. Smartypanties.com Must Haves for Your Purse This Summer: Rachel Roy Edition

Jun 13, 2011 Author: Katie Lara | Filed under: Beauty, Celebs, Fashion

Almost every weekend in NYC people want to escape the concrete jungle. With a focus on summer getaways, Rachel Roy,  gave us the scoop on her Summer Beauty Must Haves for a weekend on the beach. Below are her personal tricks to looking bright, fresh and flawless. Feel free to share with your readers!

What makeup do you carry with you for a weekend getaway?

I always carry Burberry Lip Cover NO.04 in Rosewood and Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick compact- I use it as blush! It gives a bronzy glow before the sun gives me the real deal. I also always have with me Estée Lauder TurboLash mascara.

How do you keep your make-up in tact during a day on the beach?

I don’t wear any! On the beach I stick with strawberry Lip Smacker by Bonne Bell in extra large and Jo Malone Red Roses Cologne. It not only serves as a perfume but also as a spritzer to hydrate myself. Lastly, Clarins spray-in SPF 50 for sun protection- so important!

How do you style your hair for a day on the beach?

I usually wear my hair down with little maintenance or pull it back in a pony. One of my fave summer products is KeSARI Indian Oil Hair Serum- I’m obsessed! It combines natural botanical extracts from India with state-of-the-art technology and makes your hair so shiny and reduces frizz (an essential with beach air!) To me, the perfect beach look is tousled, easy, loose waves- similar to the look that Gisele Bundchen has perfected!

Do you change your makeup and fashion routine in the summertime?

Yes! During the summer I definitely channel my bohemian chic favorites – for example Raquel Welch, Bianca Jagger and Miss Trinidad, all circa the 1970’s. In terms of summer fashions, I love high-waisted denim, men’s style blouses out of sheer cotton and long maxi skirts and dresses.

What do you always make sure to pack when you travel somewhere warm?

My must-haves when traveling somewhere warm are my Indian thong sandals, vintage 501 men’s Levi’s, a perfectly worn in brown leather belt, white tank tops, Theodora and Callum boutique print wraps and sarongs, gold door knockers and always my gold Manon body chain.

What are your three summer essentials?

1. My iPod- such a must for a day on the beach. See my summer playlist- it's on RachelRoy.com now!

2. Tunics- they are not only easy to wear in the summer time- but also serve as a great beach cover up. There are some in my Rachel Roy pre-fall collection that I am living in.

3. Lotion- I mix Jo Malone rose scented lotion with Chanel NO. 5 lotion as my summer perfume – after a tan it’s really all you need!

Sponsored Post: Legs ’11: Our Run-Down of This Season’s Spring Skirts

Mar 21, 2011 Author: Katie Lara | Filed under: Fashion

Look out the window and you’ll see that – however tentatively – spring has sprung…. Slowly but surely the temperatures are rising and the tulips and crocuses are nudging their way out of the winter soils of our parks and roadsides. It means that those woollen trousers and opaque tights will soon be banished to the back of the wardrobe for another year. Look to your feet and bid hello to those old, forgotten friends: bare legs!

The conundrum now is – what are you going to do with your precious pins this spring? If you’ve not been keeping an eye on the latest looks striding down the runways (and pavements) of the fashion globe, then have no fear. I’ve been keeping my eye out on the trends for spring/summer 2011 and this is where I’ll be compiling my favourite looks. Hopefully you’ll find something that makes you go ‘BINGO!’
One key trend still going from strength to strength is the long-length skirt.

In 2011 we’re seeing a diversion off the classic ‘maxi dress’ path (which can often float dangerously into Dynasty-on-holiday territory) and an increasing demand for maxi skirts from high street brands like New Look as well as top designers like Jil Sander. What’s more, this length seems to fit into a variety of different trends – we’re seeing some real eye-popping brights, fluos and neon shades on the catwalks, all part of the colour blocking trend, as well as some neat black varieties.

Not to be overlooked as well is the emerging obsession with pleats. Not as boring as it might sound, this one: just a quick glance of the fashion blogs show you how key this trend was for the attendees of the recent fashion weeks in Milan and Paris. We might associate them with kilts and schoolgirls, but you can combine this look is all about coverage and length: from 70s-inspired midi and calf-tickling peach tones to ankle length pleats in forest green and dark blue, those folds are a must-have. Combine with ankle boots, a simple white shirt and leather belt, and you’re good to go.

Finally, if you can’t resist giving those pins centre stage, there’s still plenty of love left for the shorter looks. Full and skater skirts have not waned in popularity: if anything, they’ve become a more solid trend – literally! Floatier fabrics are competing now with heavier-look textures (aided again by pleats and folds): linens and thick-weave cottons are a great alternative to all the chiffon flapping around this S/S 2011. Perfect for those who want to air a little more than their ankles…

AZIAM’s Alanna Zabel Offers Yoga Tips and Trends

Mar 15, 2011 Author: Katie Lara | Filed under: Fashion

With spring just around the corner it’s a perfect time to kick-start your Yoga routine to get back in shape and feeling great. Want to give your readers tips on picking the right active wear for them? Alanna Zabel, creator and founder of AZIAM active wear, offers the below tips that are sure to come in handy for anyone focusing on spring fitness.

What should women look for in yoga wear?
When looking for yoga wear, women should look for quality fabrics, excellent fits and superior manufacturing. Yoga has a philosophical foundation, so it is nice to see yoga brands accentuating their styles with yogic symbols printed onto the garments, reminding the wearer to live yoga on and off the mat. I also prefer brands who manufacture in the United States, where quality control, labor laws and authenticity are more easily monitored. From the milling of the fabric to the last detailed trim, a yogi would probably be highly conscientious to the details that went into making the garment.

What are some tips to make sure yoga gear fits right?
The tops should not be so difficult to get on that you pull a muscle while trying, nor should they be so tight that they constrict your circulation and healthy lymphatic flow once they are on. Performance fabrics, like supplex lycra, are made to fit the body. The garment doesn’t have to fit any tighter than a comfortable hug of one’s form.

Are there different tops and bottoms more suitable for different styles of yoga?
Different styles of yoga draw upon different yoga wear needs. For example, Iyengar Yoga is very focused on physical alignment. It is very important to wear form fitting clothing so that the instructor can see the lines of the body. Ashtanga Yoga and Hot Yoga are similar in their needs, so I will group them together. Ashtanga builds generous amounts of heat from the inside, while Hot Yoga induces heat from the outside. Both of these styles lead the practitioner to sweat a lot. Sports bras and yoga shorts are great for these styles of yoga. The popular Vinyasa style Flow, or Fusion classes are more open-ended on their yoga wear requirements or trending. Form fitting garments with hints of styling are popular in these kinds of classes. Bootleg bottoms, 3/4 length leggings and longer-length sports tops are mostly what I see in these classes.

Best not to wear gear designed for yoga and not the gym-why?
Yoga moves the body through a wide range of postures in every class. It is important to wear garments made with stretchable and moveable fabrics that have sweat wicking qualities. Capris with vents at the back (instead of a wider, closed-end bottom) are nice for those who want to maintain some style and flair without losing functionality of the garment. The vents allow ones knees more room while bending in standing postures and hip openers.
