Health Alert! Cancer Causing Plastic in the Microwave

There is nothing scarier to us than the word cancer. Ahh! We hate even writing it!

There was recently an eRumor going around that claimed that Johns Hopkins ordered: No plastic containers in microwave. No water bottles in freezer. No plastic wrap in microwave. The truth is that Johns Hopkins never put out such a statement. However, recently, Edward Fujimoto, Wellness Program Manager at Castle Hospital , was on a TV program to explain this health hazard. It suggested that doing any of these cause the plastic to release something that is called a Dioxin. Dioxins are highly poisonous to the cells of our bodies. He talked about dioxins and how bad they are for us. He said that we should not be heating our food in the microwave using plastic containers…He stressed that this especially applies to foods that contain fat. He said that the combination of fat, high heat, and plastics releases dioxin into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body…Instead, he recommends using glass, such as Corning Ware, Pyrex or ceramic containers for heating food… You get the same results, only without the dioxin. So such things as TV dinners, instant ramen and soups, etc., should be removed from the container and heated in something else. Paper isn’t bad but you don’t know what is in the paper. It’s just safer to use tempered glass, Corning Ware, etc.

He explained that in his view, heating food in a plastic container will produce the release of dioxins and fat will absorb them. The amount of migration of dioxins to fat, he said, will be a function of the heat in the microwave, the type of plastic, the length of time of exposure, and the amount of fat that is in contact.  Dr. Fujimoto pointed out that the amounts of dioxins in any given piece of plastic or food that is microwaved in plastic is very small, but that the problem is that dioxins get into the human body and accumulate. He said that in Japan, there has been a complete change in the way foods are packaged so that plastic is avoided. They use more glass, for example.

He reminded us that plastic wrap, such as Saran wrap, is just as dangerous when placed over foods to be cooked in the microwave. As the food is nuked, the high heat causes poisonous toxins to actually melt out of the plastic wrap and drip into the food. Cover food with a paper towel instead.

He also said that bottled water in your car is very dangerous as well. The heat causes toxins from the plastic to leak into the water and they have found these toxins in breast tissue.  Use a stainless steel Canteen or a glass bottle when you can!
